How to be a Professional Gambler

How to be a professional gambler is a question I get asked quite frequently. There is no easy answer to this question, but I will do my best to explain.

Imagine that tomorrow you will walk out of your job and decide that for the next year you will support you and your family by becoming a professional gambler.

  • What would you do?
  • Where would you get the money?
  • How can you be a professional gambler?
  • Is it even possible?
  • Where and how would you learn?

These were all questions I had surging through my brain several years ago when I decided to walk out of my “regular” job that I hated, and be a professional gambler. A life-long gambler, I had a love for gambling but no idea how to gamble professionally with an advantage over the casino. I was at a point in my professional life where I didn’t care about the risks, I just had to find something fulfilling and for me gambling was it.

The first thing I had to do was raise a bankroll. No money, no gambling. Fortunately, I had a pretty valuable sports memorabilia collection that helped me raise some quick cash. Next, was trying to figure out which games could be played for a profit. Which games could be played with an advantage? After much research, I came to find out there were five primary ways to be a pro gambler. They are sports gambling, blackjack card counting, poker vs. others, gambling on horses, and video poker.

The most popular way to become a pro gambler today is to play poker vs. other gamblers. This didn’t appeal to me, I wanted to defeat the multi-million dollar casinos not some guy who just cashed his paycheck from working hard all week.

Long story short, there were three ways games that were right for me and could be played with an advantage. They were sports gambling, blackjack card counting, and video poker. The next part was the biggest challenge, learning HOW to play these games with an advantage and if it was even possible for me to do.

I used all three of these games to support my family. It was a roller-coaster of a ride with a lot of mistakes made along the way, but you can find out exactly what happened in my book Gamblers Fight Back. It was an experience that went beyond gambling for me, it taught me many lessons about life.

About Greg Elder

I was 37 years old, a husband and father, a former teacher, college and high school basketball coach, and a business owner, I decided to give it all up (Not the husband and father part) to take a shot at pro gambling. I was coming off a job I hated selling insurance, and I vowed to do something I was passionate about. For the next year I would spend 12-15 hours a day researching, studying, and practicing advantage gambling techniques. The goal was to see if I could sustain our current lifestyle as a professional gambler. I wanted to find out if casinos really could be beat. At the time, I thought it may be the biggest mistake of my life, but my intentions were to have fun trying. It has been an interesting few years since that journey began. My feature book GAMBLERS FIGHT BACK has been released and can be purchased on my author site at www.GREGELDERAUTHOR.com I would consider my pro gambling career to be a success on all fronts. I didn't win millions of dollars, but I was able to enjoy every minute of it. It brought an excitement and passion back into my professional life. It has helped lead me to a writing career that I had no idea I even wanted before this challenge. I was able to write a book that shared with others exactly what I learned along the way.. Gambling professionally is not easy, but there are certain things the average gambler can do to increase their chances of success tremendously. That's the information I try to pass along to my readers.

  1. Is there actually a system to beat video poker? I figured whatever actions you take, the casino is going to profit, would be interested in hearing more.

    • Hello,

Yes, there are certain video poker machines that if played perfectly can be played at a profit. You have to be able to read the pay tables to figure out the best machines, and then you need to practice and learn the mathematically correct play to make for each hand dealt. Video poker is one of the few games that can actually played with the odds in your favor. It’s not easy and can be difficult finding the high payback machines but it can and is done. It takes a lot of memorization as well, but you can bring what I call a “cheat sheet” to help. Thanks for the question.
